WHEN an island nation suffers from an overwhelming geographical isolation, with the traditional form of transport by ship, it needs to establish a modern and efficient transport system. This is the story of the Republic of Nauru, an island nation 166 degrees 55 minutes east longitude and 0 degrees 55 minutes latitude, or some 32 miles south of the equator. The island is an uplifted coral formation of some 21 sq. km, with a circumference of 19.3 km. Nauru is home to one of the smallest nations on earth, with just 11,000 people and the legacy of a century of mining rich phosphate deposits.

AS WITH an aircrew medical, aircraft are stripped to the basic essentials and given a thorough check with an additional facet not available to aircrew — scheduled heavy maintenance. For a Boeing 747 the work is, literally, a jumbo task. With an extensive network and high utilisation, time is of the essence in maintaining flag carrier Air New Zealand's five strong Boeing 747-200 fleet.
