Bell Air Show

FULL marks went to Bell Air of Whakatane for their well organised airshow there last month. Despite "iffy" weather prospects and a persistent crosswind at the coastal airport, the two hour display of aircraft antics went smoothly before a crowd of several thousand, including the Mayor of Whakatane and quite a number of local dignitaries. The occasion marked Bell Airs introduction of their recently purchased Beech 99 ZK-LLA their new "intercity commuter" for use primarily on the Whakatane-Auckland run. Other aircraft notables at the show were Sea Bee Alr's Turbo Goose demonstrated capably by Murray Pope, ex-military Devon/Dove ZK-UDO, a mixed bag" Waitemata Aero Club formation and two Warbirds Harvards — "91/ENC" flown by owner ag-pilot Derek Williams of Tauranga, and "98/ENJ" flown by Air NZ B747 pilot John Denton whose solo aerobatic display produced spontaneous applause from the crowd. The ever popular helicopter car drop concluded the show.
