Jumbo Check

AS WITH an aircrew medical, aircraft are stripped to the basic essentials and given a thorough check with an additional facet not available to aircrew — scheduled heavy maintenance. For a Boeing 747 the work is, literally, a jumbo task. With an extensive network and high utilisation, time is of the essence in maintaining flag carrier Air New Zealand's five strong Boeing 747-200 fleet.

WINGS correspondent Peter Clark recently followed ZK-NZX through a heavy maintenance check (HMV) at the airline's Mangere engineering base.
